PC running hot: check temperatures, workload and airflow

Loud fans, a warm case or a high CPU reading alone are not enough to diagnose overheating. The exact device, measured sensor, workload and additional symptoms matter. This guide starts with observation and clear airflow paths rather than BIOS changes or buying a cooler.

Stop at clear warning signs

Do not continue testing if there is smoke, a burning smell, visible damage or a swollen battery. Turn off the device and disconnect power only if safe; arrange service. Repeated thermal shutdowns or a fan error are also no reason for additional stress tests. Save open work if safe and let the device cool.

Put measurements in context

  1. Record PC model, exact CPU and any GPU, room temperature, placement and running application. Note whether the behavior is new or began after modification, transport or moving the device.
  2. Use existing manufacturer diagnostics or a suitable sensor tool from a trustworthy source. Record sensor name, current reading and trend. CPU package, individual cores, GPU and case sensors are different. Their readings are not directly interchangeable.
  3. Compare with specifications for that exact component and PC manufacturer guidance. Intel distinguishes Tjunction and Tcase, among others; a case or heatsink measurement does not replace a core reading. There is no universal normal temperature for all PCs.
  4. Compare after a short idle period with the same ordinary workload. Record utilization, temperature, fan behavior and possible performance drops. Brief turbo-load peaks or one high value do not prove a defect. Throttling may be part of intended control; new severe performance loss together with cooling problems deserves investigation.

Check airflow first

Place a notebook on a firm, level surface, not a bed, blanket or cushion. Keep the manual’s specified intake and exhaust openings clear. A desktop needs clearance from walls and furniture according to manufacturer instructions. Check externally visible dust and accessible filters.

Before cleaning, shut down completely and disconnect power according to the device instructions. Follow manufacturer cleaning procedures only; keep liquids out and do not use a household vacuum on electronics. With compressed air, follow the prescribed distances and handling instructions. Never open power supplies. Leave internal cleaning, fan or cooler installation to qualified people if you cannot safely follow the service procedure.

One change, then compare

Repeat the same normal task after clearing airflow paths under comparable conditions. Document before and after rather than comparing different games or sensors. A stationary fan under light load may be normal for the model; an error or missing cooling under load needs investigation. If needed, use the model-specific manufacturer test and record error codes.

If shutdowns or unusual performance drops persist, give support the model, sensor trend, workload and airflow checks already performed. Disable neither temperature warnings nor protective shutdown. Fan curves, voltage, overclocking and BIOS updates are not universal first diagnostic steps.
