A good home network starts with a list of existing devices, not the biggest switch. This guide helps you add a small wired network while keeping Wi-Fi where it is needed. Working components do not need to be replaced as a precaution.
1. List rooms and devices
For each device, note its location, existing connection and intended use: for example, a laptop at a desk, television, printer or network storage device. A laptop without an Ethernet socket may need a compatible adapter. Check the operating system, connector type and required speed.
Mark the devices that need wired connections at the same time. Separate required connections from spare capacity. A high advertised internet speed does not mean every device port supports the same rate.
2. Draw the connections
For a simple expansion, the order is router LAN port → switch → end devices. A switch adds ports; it does not automatically replace the router, internet service or Wi-Fi. Initially plan just one connection from the new switch to the existing network. Extra parallel cables between the same devices are not a safe shortcut to more performance without appropriate configuration. For an existing business network, agree changes with its administrator.
3. Example parts list for four devices
Assumption: Four devices can be reached with pre-terminated patch cables without permanent building cabling; the existing router stays.

This list is a worked example, not a universal purchasing recommendation. If the router already has enough ports, the switch is unnecessary. A network with wall outlets and a patch panel requires different cable quantities and termination components. Permanent cable routes, fire protection and building work belong in a professional installation plan.
4. Check cable routes and equipment positions
Measure along the intended route, not straight across the room. Keep doors, walkways and ventilation openings clear. Do not place strain on sockets. Our patch cable buying checklist helps you choose connectors, lengths and cable types.
Do not put a Wi-Fi access point in a metal cabinet simply because the switch is there. Its position must also allow adequate wireless coverage. Include power, heat and accessible electrical sockets in the plan.
5. Commission the network step by step
Record the existing cabling. First connect the switch to the router and attach just one test device. Check its local connection and internet access. Add the other devices one at a time and document the occupied ports.
