Virtual memory management allows the system to use disk memory to store information that is normally stored in memory. It takes more time to access the information of the hard disk than when accessing the memory. If part of the hard drive is now used as virtual storage, the performance can decrease.
Note: You need administrator rights to change the size of the computer’s swap file.
Windows administers virtual storage to use a paging file; They set the minimum and maximum size of this file. Illustrator works best here if the maximum size of the swap file is at least three times the installed RAM.
To create a paging file with a maximum size equal to three times the amount of installed memory, follow these steps (applies to XP):
1.) Close all applications
2. Select „Start“-„Control Panel“
3.) Get the dialog box of the performance options:
– Click the registry card, select „Settings“ in the Performance section, and then click the registry card.
4.) In the virtual storage section, click on “Change”.
5.) Disable automatic file size management for all drive selection fields.
6.) In the drive list, select a disk that has three times the storage capacity of the memory installed on the computer. If your computer has 64 MB of memory, select a drive that has at least 192 MB of free memory. For best performance, take a drive that is not used by the illustrator scratch disk.
Note: To determine the sum of free memory on a drive, click the drive letter; the sum of available space appears in the size of the swap file of the selected drive section.
1.) In the initial size box in the swap file size of the drive section in question, enter a value equal to the size of the memory installed on your PC and add 300 MB.
2. In the maximum size box, enter a value equal to three times the sum of the memory installed on your PC.
3.) Close the System Properties dialog box:
a. Click on “Confirm” and then on “Ok”.
b. Click “Ok” in the Performance Options dialog box.
Click “Ok” in the System Properties dialog box.
4.) Click “Yes” in the System Settings dialog box to restart Windows.

Windows 7 and Windows Vista manages virtual storage by using a swap file. You specify the minimum or maximum size of this file. If the size differs from the Windows Vista standard, the applications may go back incorrectly. Change the size only if other applications are not adversely affected.
Note: You need administrator rights to change the size of the computer’s swap file.
1.) Close all applications.
2. Go to „Start“ control field
3.) Go to System and Security (for Windows 7), or System and Maintenance (Windows Vista), and then go to System.
4.) In the selection for computer name, domain, and workgroup selection, click Change Settings.
5.) Click on the Advanced Tab, then on “Settings” in the Performance field.
6.) Click on the Advanced Tab, and then go to “Changes” in the virtual storage area.
7.) Turn off the automatic sizing of the swap file for all drive options.
8.) In the drive list, select a disk partition that has free memory that is at least three times larger than the sum of the memory installed on the computer. To determine the sum of free memory on a drive, click the drive letter; the sum of available space appears in the size of the swap file of the selected drive section.
9.) Go to “Custom size”.
10.) In the initial size box, enter a value that corresponds to 1.5 times the sum of the available memory on the computer.
11.) In the maximum size field, enter a value equal to twice the sum of the initial size value.
12) Click “Set”, then “Ok” to close the virtual storage dialog box.
13.) Click “Ok” to close the field to the performance option, then confirm with “Ok” to close the field to the system performances.
