Lexware Office – formerly lexoffice – is a browser-based enterprise software for the self-employed and small businesses. The four versions build on each other. Therefore, not a short-term discount should decide, but the question of which tasks should be done permanently in the software.

Quick comparison of versions

What all versions have in common

For all four packages, Lexware mentions the GoBD long-term document archive, mobile apps for Android and iOS, receipt scanner, online banking with payment reconciliation, open items and the recording of structured e-bills. Hosting, data backup, updates and support are included in the monthly price. The packages can be cancelled monthly according to the manufacturer.

Which version is the right one?

Lexware Office S: digital receipt storage

S is the entry point for document collection and archiving. Anyone who writes basic invoices in a different system and above all wants to bundle receipts, bank movements and cooperation with the tax office should start here.

Lexware Office M: Creating invoices yourself

M complements the ordering process: offers, invoices, delivery notes, order confirmations, products and services and reminders. E-bills in the formats ZUGFeRD and XBill can also be created and transmitted. For many solo self-employed people, M is the pragmatic start.

Lexware Office L: ongoing accounting

L extends M with accounting with profit and loss accounting and EÜR, VAT advance notification, summary declaration, asset management, cash book and liquidity forecast. This version fits if the accounting is not only prepared, but largely self-managed.

Lexware Office XL: more complex processes

XL is aimed at companies that require special invoice types such as discount, EU or English invoices, serial invoices, advanced CRM functions or the API. Without a specific need for these functions, L is often more economical.

Our short recommendation: S for receipts, M for invoicing, L for self-managed accounting and XL for integrations or special business processes. Before concluding with tax consultancy and process managers, clarify which reports and bookings are actually done themselves.

E-bills and payroll

All versions can record e-bills; from M, structured e-bills can be created and sent. “Wage & Salary” is optionally available for versions S to XL and starts regularly at € 12.90 net per month. Lexware identifies individual unsupported types of employment and special cases, including construction wages, public service and private domestic help. These limits should be examined before conversion.

Strengths

  • Staggered packages from document archive to more comprehensive cloud accounting
  • Monthly cancellability, updates, data backup and support included
  • Mobile receipt collection and bank reconciliation
  • E-bill functions and cooperation with tax offices
  • Numerous partner extensions and an API in XL

Limits and purchase instructions

  • According to the manufacturer, a license is valid for a trade or a company.
  • Cloud usage requires a stable Internet connection and a supported browser or app environment.
  • Examine special cases in accounting, wages, industries or international processes in advance.
  • Do not confuse promotional prices with the regular follow-up costs.
  • Lexware Office does not replace individual tax or legal advice.

Test 30 days

Lexware offers a 30-day trial with the features of XL and Pay & Salary. According to the manufacturer, the test ends automatically. A realistic trial run with documents, bank connection, an e-bill and – if relevant – the export or access for the tax office makes sense.

Conclusion

Lexware Office is especially interesting when receipts, invoices, banking and accounting are to converge in a cloud application. M covers invoicing, L is the most sensible focal point for many self-bookers and XL is worthwhile with clearly specified additional requirements. Those who initially only want to collect and hand over digitally do not have to be larger than S.
