An offline message in the app does not automatically mean poor Wi-Fi reception. Depending on its model, a mower may communicate through Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a mobile network or a separate gateway. Identify that route first to avoid buying the wrong repeater or performing an unnecessary factory reset. This researched IT guide describes a diagnostic process, not our own wireless range test.
1. Identify the actual connection route
Record the model, app, software version and exact error. Check the manual for the connections fitted to your particular mower and their purposes. Bluetooth setup is not the same as Wi-Fi remote access. GPS capability does not imply an internet connection either.
| System state | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Bluetooth works but remote access does not | Local connection works; check Wi-Fi, mobile service and cloud separately |
| Router assigns an address but the app says offline | Wi-Fi association alone does not prove cloud connectivity |
| Gateway is offline | Check gateway-to-router communication before looking for an SSID on the mower |
| Failures occur only behind the shed | Compare coverage in specific locations |
GARDENA describes its smart Gateway as the connection between smart devices and the internet, with the app using that route. This differs from a mower connected directly to Wi-Fi. See the GARDENA system FAQ.
2. Test within suitable range first
Stop or park the mower according to its manual. Keep it safely stationary during setup and diagnosis; do not change safety or boundary functions. Begin where the required wireless connection should be reliable. Keep your phone within the specified distance when setting up over Bluetooth.
Husqvarna specifies 2.4 GHz for Wi-Fi-capable Automower models. This does not mean disabling 5 GHz throughout your home. Check that 2.4 GHz is enabled on the relevant access point and that your model supports the selected encryption mode. Temporarily using a separate SSID can simplify diagnosis, but it is not universally required. See Husqvarna’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.
3. Check authentication, address assignment and internet access separately
- Network name: select the correct SSID and check typing errors. Never post passwords in support forums or screenshots.
- Access method: a guest or hotel network requiring a browser sign-in is unsuitable for many devices. Use a supported encrypted network, not an open network as a permanent workaround.
- Router: check whether the mower or gateway is actually connected and has an IP address. Identify the correct device using manufacturer information.
- Internet and cloud: do other connections on that network work? Does the app report a cloud or account error? A phone may silently use mobile data, making it an invalid Wi-Fi comparison.
- Local communication: device isolation in a separate IoT network may prevent setup or discovery. Check the documented connections rather than permanently opening the entire firewall or guest network.
Husqvarna explicitly distinguishes cloud and Bluetooth connection status. This distinction is more informative than repeatedly reinstalling the app.
4. Does it work near the house but fail in the garden?
Compare the charging station, open lawn and problem area separately. Record time, position and connection status. Phone signal bars are only an indication: the phone’s antenna and position differ from those of a mower close to the ground.
| Extension option | What to check before buying |
|---|---|
| Wired access point | Suitable mounting position, Ethernet route and weather-rated hardware |
| Mesh node | A reliable connection back to the mesh, not just to the mower |
| Repeater | Usable original signal at the repeater’s intended position |
A repeater placed inside a dead zone cannot create a stable upstream connection. Use equipment suitable for outdoor installation and its power arrangements; indoor devices must not be exposed to rain or moisture. Our existing introduction to Wi-Fi repeaters provides background, not a survey of your garden.
5. Which functions require the internet?
On some systems, an outage mainly affects app access or updates; on others it affects cloud-assisted navigation. Husqvarna explains model differences in its Wi-Fi setup guide. Do not assume every mower can continue indefinitely offline.
After correcting the issue, check actual operation over several normal mowing runs and after a restart, including the previous problem area. A green app indicator at the charging station is not proof of full-area coverage.
Before a factory reset
Back up or document maps, schedules and device assignments using the app’s supported options. A reset can affect setup and links, but cannot add missing wireless hardware or fix a permanent coverage gap. If connection still fails under controlled close-range conditions, contact the manufacturer with the model, status indicators and specific tests. Do not share account passwords, PINs or complete private network diagrams.
