An HTML file is a portable copy of your Chrome bookmarks. It is useful for changing browsers or keeping an extra backup, but it is not a complete Chrome profile backup. Use Chrome on a computer.
Step by step
- Select the Chrome profile containing the bookmarks you want. Check familiar folders, especially on a shared computer.
- Open the Chrome menu → Bookmarks and lists → Bookmark manager. Open the manager's own menu and select Export bookmarks.
- Save the HTML file with a clear name and date. Keep another copy on a separate backup medium; a single copy on the old PC will not help if that PC fails.
- Open the saved HTML file in a browser and inspect folders and several familiar entries. Spot-check destination addresses without sharing confidential links.
- For migration, import the HTML file using the destination browser's bookmark import feature. Check folders and entries again before retiring the old computer.
Check the result
An export becomes a useful backup only after verification. The file does not include saved passwords, extensions or open tabs. Treat internal addresses and personal bookmarks as private.
Undo and limitations
Exporting does not remove bookmarks. Repeated imports may create extra entries, so do not import repeatedly as a guess. Keep the original file and compare results instead of deleting old collections prematurely.
