Three quarters of CIOs spend more on IT this year

Survey: Significant increase in IT spending in Europe, Middle East & Africa

Vienna (pts012/18.04.2013/11:05) – 71 percent of CIOs in the regions Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) plan to increase their IT investments in 2013. This was the result of a survey conducted by Vanson Bourne on behalf of application performance company Riverbed on IT spending priorities.

Independent market research firm Vanson Bourne surveyed a total of 400 CIOs in Germany, France, the United Arab Emirates, Poland and the UK. Respondents were asked to report their top five IT investments over the next 12 months. As top priorities crystallized clearly virtualization and consolidation programs.

In EMEA, IT investments are mainly made in the following five areas:

Server virtualization – 50%

* Desktop virtualization – 40 percent

* Memory virtualization – 34 percent

* Consolidation of branches – 33 percent

* Storage consolidation – 33 percent

In addition, other trends in CIOs’ investment plans have emerged:

* Ten percent of the companies surveyed said they wanted to make very high investments in order to improve the competitiveness of their company.

* 28 percent of the companies surveyed said that efficiency and reducing overall spending are the main drivers of their investments over the next 12 months.

* 33 percent of CIOs surveyed said they want to invest “cautiously” in IT in 2013 to prepare their organization for the challenges of the next decade.

* 20 percent assume that spending will remain at the same level as in the last three to five years.

* Only nine percent of the entire sample said they wanted to reduce their IT budget and spend less in the next twelve months.

‚The planned investments obviously focus primarily on the issue of centralisation of technology in order to remain competitive.‘ CIOs are aware of the cost and time savings that consolidation and virtualization can bring. However, they also understand that the network needs to be optimized to maintain application performance and actually take advantage of these initiatives, says Willem Hendrickx, SVP EMEA at Riverbed Technology. This is underlined by the fact that 38 percent of CIOs in EMEA cite application performance via the WAN as an obstacle to consolidation. As more and more services are virtualized and the dependence on web-based tools increases, optimizing the WAN is important to work as usual – even if the technical environment is anything but ordinary.

“The initiatives, which have absolute budget priorities in Germany, revolve around the topics of consolidation and virtualization,” says Andreas Hartl, Regional Director Germany at Riverbed. ‚The main hurdles that currently prevent companies from implementing are the complexity and initial costs that such initiatives entail. Here, vendors need to take companies by the hand, and especially help them with the challenges of complexity – with solutions that allow companies to get the most out of their investments. Companies that want to keep up with the competition are therefore dependent on developments by service providers that support their efforts in the course of consolidation and virtualization.
