Does Ctrl+Shift+A open something unexpected after an update? Firefox 159 changes the default shortcuts for tab search and add-on management. This guide helps desktop users and support teams distinguish an intentional change from a keyboard conflict.
What changed in Firefox 159
Mozilla released Firefox 159.0 on October 27, 2026. On Windows and Linux, Ctrl+Shift+A now searches open tabs; Ctrl+Shift+F opens Extensions and Themes. On macOS, use Cmd+Shift+A and Cmd+Shift+E respectively. These are defaults, not a promise for previously customized profiles. This procedure does not cover Android or iOS. [1]
Prepare without risking your profile
Record the operating system, keyboard layout, running Firefox version and custom bindings. Save unfinished work. On managed computers, follow the approved update route rather than switching from ESR to Release yourself. Before wider profile changes, make a protected backup using Mozilla's instructions: fully close Firefox, keep the copy outside the active folder and do not share it. It may contain sensitive data. For a single shortcut adjustment, start by recording its existing binding. [4] [5]
Five diagnostic steps
- Confirm the version in About Firefox. If an update is appropriate, use the route matching the installation: Mozilla installer, Microsoft Store or Linux package management. Recheck the running version after restarting. An older ESR release need not have identical default shortcuts. [4]
- Open two harmless tabs, such as a public news page and a search page. Click an ordinary page area, not a text field. Press Ctrl+Shift+A on Windows/Linux or Cmd+Shift+A on macOS, search for a distinctive tab title and select the result. Check that it activates the tab already open. [1]
- Test add-on management separately: Ctrl+Shift+F on Windows/Linux or Cmd+Shift+E on macOS should open Extensions and Themes. Do not install or remove an extension for this check. It verifies access, not the safety of installed add-ons. [1]
- If the result differs, repeat outside text fields and compare active operating-system, window-manager or utility shortcuts. If the browser menu works but the key combination does not, record a possible conflict rather than declaring a browser defect. Do not disable security features. [3]
- Only if necessary, open about:keyboard and locate the action. Record its current binding before changing one combination. Changes save automatically. Mozilla labels this feature experimental and notes limited support beyond English US-QWERTY layouts. Explicitly retest your own layout. [2]
Acceptance checks and recovery
Acceptance means tab search finds the known title, Enter activates the correct tab, add-on management opens and the previous workflow remains accessible. Repeat in a new window. If a customization fails, reset that binding only: resetting all shortcuts also discards unrelated customizations. Close Firefox before restoring a profile through the documented backup procedure. Do not use a downgrade or profile refresh as a quick fix. For unresolved problems, send support the version, layout, starting focus, key sequence and actual destination, not confidential tab contents. [2] [5]
Date, limitations and sources
As of October 29, 2026. A source-based diagnostic workflow, not our own hands-on Firefox 159 test or a guarantee for every layout or managed profile. The manufacturer release provides editorial relevance; an observed German trend is neither search volume nor proof of demand for this exact problem. No affiliate links.
