Updated: 2 November 2026. Is a presentation silent just before your talk? This guide helps presenters and small IT teams separate the file, application and audio output. LibreOffice 26.8.2 includes Impress audio fixes. [1] A controlled update therefore matters, but it does not establish the cause of every sound problem.
Scope and limitations
The vendor announcement dated 29 October specifically mentions Windows and inserted MP3 files; it does not promise a universal fix across operating systems. [1] These instructions concern the desktop application, not a browser viewer or PDF export. A silent video, missing background music and an unavailable linked file are different symptoms. Record whether one slide, one presentation or other applications are affected. An MP3 playing outside Impress does not guarantee identical behaviour during a talk: media support also depends on the operating system. [2]
Preparation and backup
Save a working copy under a new name and separately back up the original and external media. Never experiment on the only copy before an event. Prepare a short, harmless audio clip you have permission to use. Record the operating system, installed LibreOffice version, ODP/PPTX format and intended speaker. Check system requirements and the approved installation route before changing software. [4]
Five safe diagnostic steps
- Check output first: play the test clip in an application already installed. Check volume, mute and selected output, particularly after connecting HDMI, a dock or Bluetooth. If that is silent too, investigate operating-system output first. Avoid disconnecting devices at random and change only one setting per attempt.
- Inspect the affected copy: select the media object and check playback and mute on the media toolbar. [3] Watch whether the position advances. A moving counter without sound is different from an object that never starts. Record the slide number and behaviour in editing and presentation modes rather than assigning a bug immediately.
- Separate file from presentation: insert the harmless clip into a new local test presentation using Insert → Audio or Video. [2] Compare it with the working copy on the same computer and output. For linked media, check that the original file remains accessible at the expected location. Do not overwrite media or experimentally convert the original.
- Update in a controlled way: read the running version under Help → About LibreOffice. For an older 26.8 build, use the approved current maintenance release; 26.8.2 contains the cited correction. [1] IT controls deployment on managed devices. On Linux follow the distribution's intended installation route. [4] Do not install codec bundles from arbitrary download sites.
- Compare after restarting: repeat the same short clip, slide and audio output. Then check the relevant talk sequence with the planned slide changes. Save only the working copy, close it and reopen it. One successful clip is not a substitute for rehearsal on the actual presentation device.
Acceptance check and recovery
Your own acceptance run passes only when sound onset, volume, slide transitions and reopening work repeatedly. Record version, date and result. If you edited the copy, return to the untouched original backup; that does not reverse a software installation. Involve IT for software recovery instead of blindly downgrading to an obsolete version. A talk without audio is a fallback, not a repair.
When to ask for support
If only the original presentation fails, give support a minimal, non-sensitive reproduction, version, format, link type and exact steps. Do not upload confidential slides or protected recordings publicly. This is source-based diagnostic guidance, not our own Impress product test or a guarantee for every media format.
