Big Data Makes the Leap From Hype to Business Factor
Vienna (pts027/04/18/2013/15:05) – Big Data is the IT topic that is currently most challenging to companies – and only with Big Data Analytics can they leverage the previously untapped potential in their mountains of data. This tenor accompanied the opening of the SAS Forum Austria 2013. The conference on solutions for the analysis of business data (business analytics) is taking place for the fifth time – and has a new visitor record: More than 270 participants came to the Sofitel Vienna Stephansdom.
At the opening event, Dietmar Kotras, Country Manager of SAS Austria, explained: Analytics is no longer an issue only for specialists. This technology is a real game changer. Rapid data-based decisions are required throughout the economy. This changes the actions of companies and people. Gerhard Altmann, Director Technology & Services of SAS Germany, added: The market is still too often occupied with retrospectives. However, the added value lies in the forward-looking control, i.e. forecasting, optimization. For this, we need high-performance solutions in the face of big data. They are available today.
Guest speakers were Prof. Dr. Peter Pawlowsky, one of the leading researchers in the field of high performance, and Prof. Dr. Ing. Norbert Gronau, specialist in operational knowledge management. Prof. Gronau sees the economy on its way to analytical organizations: „The need for analytics is recognized in all industries and at all levels, the use alone is still expandable.“ 70 percent of companies do not have access to their company data. The exception is banks and insurance companies.
Prof. Pavlovsky emphasized in his presentation the role of teamwork and leadership in the transition towards high-performance business units: The logic of performance is partly contrary to industrial principles. So it is not easy for us in business to see the sense of the individual’s actions beyond the monetary things. However, we must create this transfer, convey enthusiasm for the task. Leadership plays a very important role in this.
The SAS Forum Austria is an established conference for company representatives from a wide variety of industries and from public administration. The event will focus on practical presentations by customers such as Vienna Insurance Group, Erste Bank or Deutsche Telekom and application examples of analytical software solutions. SAS is one of the world’s largest software vendors and technology leaders for Big Data Analytics.
