An SSD is missing from Windows File Explorer or Windows asks to initialize it? Do not confirm that dialog if the drive might contain data. This Windows 11 diagnosis distinguishes missing hardware detection from an unmounted volume. It is not a guide to recovering data by formatting.
Existing data comes first
Record model, capacity, connection type and last working state. Is the SSD new and demonstrably empty, or does it contain files from another computer? If its history is unclear, treat it as a disk holding important data. Initializing, formatting, creating volumes and commands such as diskpart clean are not diagnosis. If damage is suspected, do not run file-system repairs that write to the only original.
Narrow down connection and detection
- For a USB SSD, first try a direct computer USB port rather than a hub and a suitable, known-working data cable. Check any required external power. Stop copying and safely eject accessible drives before changing connections.
- For an internal SSD, check drive, slot and interface compatibility in the device manual. Before checking cables or seating, shut down completely and disconnect power according to manufacturer instructions. Open the device only if you can follow its intended service procedure. A matching form factor alone does not prove compatibility.
- Check, without changes, whether the internal SSD appears in the UEFI or BIOS hardware/storage overview. The boot list alone is not a complete drive inventory. Do not experimentally change RAID, AHCI or boot settings. In Windows, also check Device Manager for the drive and error status.
- Open Computer Management as administrator, then Storage → Disk Management. Identify the drive by model and capacity, not just a disk number that may change. Record the full status and cancel any initialization prompt.
Interpret the status correctly
Healthy data volume without a letter: If Windows supports its existing file system, a missing drive letter may explain the problem. Assign a free letter only to a clearly identified ordinary data volume; leave EFI, recovery and system partitions unchanged.
RAW, unallocated or not initialized: These labels do not prove the SSD is empty. If data is expected, do not format or create a new volume. A foreign file system or encrypted/locked unit also needs the appropriate environment and, where necessary, its existing key, not fresh setup. Investigate Offline status together with its error message and history first.
When should you stop?
If the SSD becomes reliably readable again, back up important files to another disk first and verify the copy. With dropouts, read errors or irreplaceable data without a backup, avoid repeated stress tests: agree further steps with a qualified data recovery specialist. If it remains undetected through a verified compatible connection, document tests for the manufacturer or support. Only a clearly new, empty SSD should then be set up using Microsoft instructions; that is a separate step, not a repair for data loss.
