Upgrading RAM: which memory fits my PC or laptop?

Choose RAM for your exact computer or motherboard model, not just by capacity. The DDR generation, form factor, supported module capacity and slot configuration must all match. A free slot reported by software does not prove that a laptop is physically upgradeable.

This researched practical guide covers selection, installation and verification. It is not based on our own hardware testing and does not promise specific performance gains or a universally suitable product.

1. Is insufficient memory actually the problem?

In Windows, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Observe memory under Performance while running your usual applications. Under Processes, sort by memory usage. Also record CPU and disk activity: extra RAM will not automatically fix a slow SSD or an overloaded processor. Microsoft explains these separate checks in its Windows performance guidance.

A single high percentage is not enough to justify a purchase. Look for repeated slowdowns during normal work, applications failing because memory is insufficient, and a reproducible improvement after closing memory-intensive programs. If just one process grows continuously over several hours, investigate that application and its extensions first. Initially leave the paging file managed by Windows. RAM-cleaning utilities are not a substitute for diagnosis.

2. Record these details before ordering

Identify the exact model and variant. For a custom-built PC, record the motherboard model, revision and processor. In Windows, msinfo32 can help identify the system, but check the physical label and manufacturer documentation. There is no need to publish serial numbers.

Find the service manual on the computer manufacturer’s support website. A tool such as the Kingston memory finder provides an additional compatibility check using the system model or part number. If the finder and manual disagree, clarify the exact variant with the manufacturer before buying.

3. Understand DDR generations, form factors and the QVL

DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable. Installing a DDR5 module cannot turn a DDR4 computer into a DDR5 system. Do not choose similar-looking modules solely by colour, heat spreader or advertised speed.

The motherboard manufacturer’s Qualified Vendor List, or QVL, records tested memory configurations. Compare the complete kit part number, capacity, module count and any processor or BIOS conditions. For a new configuration, one kit tested together is usually a simpler choice than two separately purchased kits. Identical marketing names do not guarantee identical memory chips. XMP/EXPO are optional performance profiles, not a guarantee that every system will run stably at the advertised value. See the Kingston gaming-memory support notes. 4. 16, 32 or 64 GB?

These capacities are editorial guidance, not measured minimum requirements. Your actual projects and software requirements determine what you need.

An office PC with 16 GB and sufficient spare capacity for its everyday tasks does not need 64 GB simply because a new year has arrived. Conversely, a development machine running several virtual machines may be constrained even with 32 GB. Do not buy solely from this table or from one idle Windows reading. On a non-upgradeable laptop, choose sufficient capacity when buying the computer.

5. Install the modules in a controlled sequence

  1. Save your work and back up important data. Have the correct service manual ready. For a company computer, coordinate the change with your IT team.
  2. Shut down completely and disconnect the power adapter and peripherals. Follow the laptop’s specific procedure for service mode or battery disconnection. Internal batteries must not all be treated identically; the Dell Latitude 5430 service manual illustrates a model-specific procedure.
  3. Use appropriate electrostatic-discharge precautions and a suitable work surface. Hold modules by their edges, not their contacts or components. Never open the power supply unit.
  4. Record or photograph the existing slot arrangement. Release the retaining clips as instructed and align the new module’s notch correctly. Never force a misaligned module into place.
  5. Use the recommended slots. A2/B2 is common on many motherboards but is not a universal rule. SO-DIMM and DIMM installation procedures differ; follow the illustrations in your manual.
  6. Reconnect everything you disconnected and close the case. Store the old modules safely until the new configuration works reliably.

6. Verify the result

First check that UEFI/BIOS recognises the total capacity. Then compare the Windows display and your normal workload. A successful boot is not a stability test: run the manufacturer’s memory diagnostics or Windows Memory Diagnostic, and test your real applications. Save open work first because the diagnostic requires a restart. Microsoft also recommends Windows Memory Diagnostic when investigating crashes.

PC will not start after a RAM upgrade: narrow down the cause

Memory training can make the first startup longer after a RAM change. ASUS describes several minutes without a display on certain devices. This is not a universal timeout for every motherboard. Check the manufacturer’s model-specific guidance and avoid repeatedly interrupting a documented training process.

If startup still fails, power down completely and disconnect the supply as instructed before touching hardware. Check seating and slot choice. Try each new module separately in the recommended slot. If the old modules still work, compare the new kit’s full part number with the compatibility approval. If neither old nor new modules work, a loose connection or slot issue is another possibility. A DRAM indicator identifies a startup stage; it does not by itself prove that a module is faulty. ASUS provides structured startup troubleshooting.

A BIOS update or CMOS reset is not a first step to take without checking the consequences: either can affect other settings. Use such steps only with specific manufacturer guidance and recovery information safely available. Damaged contacts, unclear battery procedures or repeated diagnostic errors are reasons to seek qualified service rather than continue experimenting.
