Updated September 23, 2026. Desktop users relying on VLC for videos, music or presentations should review version 3.0.24. The version number alone is not enough: your files, audio tracks and subtitles must still work afterwards. This guide is for home users and small offices; it is not a hands-on software test.
What changed on September 22
VideoLAN reports more than 130 security fixes across VLC and bundled libraries in the September 22 release. This does not mean 130 separate VLC CVEs or confirmed active attacks. FFmpeg moves from 4.4 to 8.1.2 and 49 third-party libraries are updated. Fixes also cover Windows audio/Direct3D11 and the MIDI synthesizer on macOS 26 and later. [1] [2] Existing workflows need attention: RealRTSP is disabled, while the NPAPI browser plugin and broken YouTube Lua script are removed. Update verification switches to a new RSA-4096 key. None of this is an instruction to disable protection.
Preparation and scope
Record your VLC version, operating system and installation source. Back up important playlists and record custom settings such as audio output and subtitle delay. Prepare two familiar, intact local test files; do not upload private media. On managed computers, obtain the IT department's deployment clearance. Do not apply desktop version 3.0.24 numbers to Android or iOS without verification. Linux packages may be maintained separately.
Update in six steps
- Open VLC's version information, usually under Help or the VLC menu. Record the full version and check for multiple installations. Do not change anything yet.
- Open VideoLAN's official website yourself, or use your existing trusted package/store channel. Choose the correct operating system and architecture. Avoid download adverts and promoted codec or repair bundles. [2]
- Stop playback, recording and conversion. Save playlists and close VLC before installation. Do not introduce a second installation channel on a managed computer without IT clearance.
- Install the update offered for your channel. Stop if a signature, certificate or origin warning appears and verify the source; the changed update key does not justify bypassing a warning. For Linux, consult the package maintainer's notes instead of judging security from the version number alone.
- Restart VLC and check the version information. Play the same known local file used before updating. Check picture, sound, seeking, the required audio track and available subtitles. A second file helps identify file-specific problems.
- Only then check required network sources and presentation workflows using permitted content. Record the result, version and affected function. Successful local playback does not prove that every network stream works.
If something stops working
A previous YouTube link or RealRTSP workflow may fail because the relevant function was explicitly removed or disabled; reinstalling does not automatically restore it. Use the regular browser for YouTube or an alternative permitted by the provider. For a black picture or missing audio, first check the output device, mute setting and comparison file. Do not start with a blanket settings reset, driver replacement or changes to system security.
Success checks and recovery
The check succeeds only when the expected version from the chosen channel launches and the required comparison files work, including sound and subtitles. Restore individual experimental settings to their recorded values. If a regression remains, preserve the files and give IT or support the operating system, version and reproducible steps. Downgrading may remove security fixes and is not a general recommendation.
