Vienna (pts005/16.04.2013/08:00) – The International Amateur Radio Union (IARU), as an international association of amateur radio associations, was founded in April 1925 in Paris to better represent the interests of radio amateurs at world radio conferences. On the occasion of its founding, the annual World Amateur Radio Day was also launched on 18 April. In total, more than 150 amateur radio associations belong to the IARU worldwide.
Amateur radio is a technical-experimental radio service that is regulated in Austria by the Amateur Radio Act, a component of telecommunications law.
Worldwide, the interests of radio amateurs enjoy special protection under recognised international law because of their special technical development and structural support in emergencies and disasters. Information about the amateur radio service and the services of Austrian radio amateurs can be found on the homepage of the Austrian Experimental Broadcasting Association at http://www.oevsv.at .
The tasks of the amateur radio service include, inter alia, participation in the emergency and disaster radio service. For this purpose, modern and proven methods of radio technology are trained and experimented with propagation phenomena. Young people and students will also find an opportunity to test the theory of wireless communication in practice.
In order to become a radio amateur, you have to take a state amateur radio exam and then get assigned by the telecommunications authority a call sign, which exists only once in the world.
Across all political, ethnic and social boundaries, amateur radio connects people, outside mobile telephony and the Internet, at any time and even by the simplest means.
