Format USB flash drives

Context update: 14 September 2026

The 2011 report remains below. Its Any Drive Formatter download address returned HTTP 404 in today’s check. A current trustworthy source and compatibility have not been established. Do not download a replacement from an arbitrary mirror or run unknown software as administrator. An already recognized USB drive does not require an additional formatting utility.

Formatting removes the data on the selected volume. Quick format does not protect against data loss either. If important files are missing or unreadable without an independent copy, stop; do not format, initialize or write more data.

  1. Copy all needed files to another drive and open important copies.
  2. Identify the USB drive by name, capacity and connection. Stop if there are unclear partitions or uncertainty about the target.
  3. Choose the file system for its use: exFAT for Windows/Mac exchange, NTFS for Windows; FAT32 only when required by the device. Files of 4 GiB or larger do not fit on FAT32. Device instructions also govern boot and recovery media; this guide does not cover those.
  4. In File Explorer under This PC, right-click the identified external volume and open Format. Recheck target and file system. Start and confirm the warning only after verifying the backup. Do not use forceful commands if the drive is write-protected, unrecognized or reports errors.
  5. Copy an unimportant test file, safely eject, reconnect and open it. Test both systems for exchange and keep the backup.

Neither quick nor full formatting is recommended here as guaranteed secure erasure or repair of a faulty flash drive. No hands-on execution or current test of Any Drive Formatter is claimed. The old timing estimate is not a current duration guarantee.

In Windows 7, Vista and XP, USB flash drives, external hard drives and memory cards can also be formatted through Windows Explorer.

However, basic knowledge is required because formatting is only accessible through the Windows Explorer context menu. The free tool Any Drive Formatter is therefore presented here as suitable for beginners, allowing USB flash drives, external hard drives and memory cards to be formatted easily:

  1. Download Any Drive Formatter and install the application.
  2. Then start Any Drive Formatter with administrator privileges.
  3. Select the drive you want to format from the list.
  4. Choose the formatting method. Full Format is selected by default; this fully formats the drive and may take from a few minutes to an hour or more, depending on capacity. With Quick-Format, formatting finishes within a few seconds.
  5. Before clicking Format, check again that you have selected the correct drive. Then start formatting.

Any Drive Formatter supports the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7, Vista and XP.
