Formatting deletes data on the selected volume or device. It is not data recovery. If important files are unreadable and have no independent copy, stop; do not format or initialize. The old text understates data loss by saying it may occur. Windows was not limited to FAT32 even then; the old WD FAT32 utility is not a current recommendation here.
Consider exFAT for sharing between Windows and macOS. NTFS supports reading and writing in Windows, but only reading in macOS by default. APFS is a Mac option, not a general Windows exchange format. Check other devices in their manuals. None of these choices replaces a backup.
First copy all needed files to another drive and open important copies. Identify the target by name, capacity and connection. Check for multiple partitions; stop if the scope of deletion is unclear. Ensure a stable connection.
Windows: Only for a recognized, clearly identified external volume, open This PC in File Explorer, right-click and select Format. Recheck the file system and target before Start and the data-loss confirmation. Mac: Show All Devices in Disk Utility and distinguish the device from its volumes. Erasing the entire device affects all data on it. Use Apple’s linked device-erasure guide only after a complete backup and checking the format and partition scheme.
Then copy an unimportant test file, safely eject, reconnect and open it; test both systems when sharing. Keep the backup. Success does not prove a previously problematic drive is reliable. Editorial source review, not our own hardware test.
FAT32 cannot store individual files of 4 GiB or larger. 32 GB is not a universal partition limit of this file system. The old generalization about invisible Mac files is not a reliable diagnosis.

Historical translation revised on 9 September 2026. The following records the 2013 article, including its incorrect claims and obsolete button names; it is not a current procedure. The original described reformatting as sometimes necessary for proper use, called formatting a Western Digital My Passport easy, recommended backups because data might be lost and praised the WD utility. It claimed that Windows 2000, XP and Vista could create only FAT32 partitions, limited partitions to 32 GB, and stated that drive performance and partitions were unrelated. These are historical claims, not present-day findings.
Mac OS X: historical steps
- Connect the powered-on Western Digital My Passport to the powered-on computer.
- Open Finder, then Applications.
- Open the program for the connected drive in Utilities.
- Select the drive to be reformatted.
- Click the control called ‘Remove’ in the original, open its menu, select FAT32 and enter a drive name if requested.
- Select ‘Remove’ and confirm ‘Remove’ again in the dialog.
Windows PC: historical steps
- Install the downloaded Western Digital FAT32 utility.
- Connect the powered-on Western Digital My Passport to the powered-on computer.
- Open the utility, select the external drive and the option described as restoring the original FAT32 partition.
- Click Start, acknowledge the warning with OK, then choose Yes; the original describes this as bypassing the command prompt.
Historical tips and warnings
- Back up important data BEFORE formatting.
- When reformatting a laptop, check that it is connected; the original does not clearly distinguish the laptop from its external drive.
- The original gives a limit below 4GB for FAT32 files.
- The original associates invisible Mac OS X files with Windows errors and says moving or changing a file makes it unusable. This unclear generalization is not a verified diagnosis.
- For Mac OS X 10.6, the original says NTFS can be read but not written.
Each old procedure ends with ‘Finished!’; that is not an actual verification of success.
