GIMP 3.2.6 has been available since 10 September 2026. If you edit product photos, community artwork or layered photo projects, checking the version number is only the start: existing projects must open, remain editable and export correctly. This guide provides a manageable validation run without overwriting original files.
What changed
The GIMP team reports security fixes, including CVE-2026-18301, and improvements to font handling. Older XCF files can initially still show clipped text in a fixed text box; according to the developer, changing the text layer refreshes its display. The reorganised macOS package adds platform fixes. None of this guarantees flawless files or universal plug-in compatibility. [1]
Requirements and package selection
The download page distinguishes the Windows installer, requiring Windows 10 1903 or newer, from the Microsoft Store package, requiring Windows 11 or at least Windows Server 2022, build 20348. macOS requires version 11 or newer and the appropriate Intel or Apple Silicon package. The Linux AppImage requirement is Debian 13 or a newer distribution; do not apply that requirement indiscriminately to Flatpak or distribution packages. Being able to install an application does not establish that the operating system still receives security support. [2]
Six steps to a verified update
- Record your setup: note the GIMP version, operating system, installation source and essential plug-ins. Choose a small test project containing a text layer, layer mask and transparency, plus a representative everyday file. Do not use confidential images in public bug reports.
- Make a backup: save open work as XCF, close GIMP and copy projects to a separate backup location. Also back up custom brushes, templates and required settings. Check that the backup is readable. PNG and JPEG do not replace an editable XCF project; XCF does not preserve undo history either. [3]
- Obtain the appropriate update: visit the official download page and preferably retain your existing installation channel. On managed devices, let IT approve the change. Check architecture and package requirements; do not install an additional variant simply because your current source has not offered the update yet. [2]
- Check the version and open a copy: close and restart GIMP after updating, confirm that it displays 3.2.6 and open only a working copy of your test project. Compare layer count, visibility, fonts and masks with the previous result. Do not apply the workflow to all originals yet.
- Check text and tools: inspect line endings in fixed text boxes. If the documented display issue remains, change one character only in the copy and observe whether the text is redrawn. Test essential plug-ins separately. A missing font or plug-in crash does not establish that your image collection is damaged. [1]
- Save and export: save the edited copy under a new XCF name, close it and reopen it. Also export a PNG or JPEG under a new name and open it in a second image viewer. Check dimensions, visible text and colours; test transparency with PNG, not JPEG. Keep the original and backup unchanged. [3]
If something goes wrong
If only one project fails, compare it with a small newly created image. If only one plug-in fails, record its version and the precise action, then check GIMP 3 compatibility with its developer. Do not immediately delete all settings or install random repair packages. Leave originals untouched while investigating. Because this release includes security fixes, an older version is not an automatically safe fallback; if necessary, use a previously validated, supported working environment with the backup and do not process unknown files there.
When the migration passes
The run passes only when 3.2.6 is displayed, the new XCF copy remains correct after reopening, required tools work and the export looks correct outside GIMP. This checks the chosen workflow, not every file format or the application's overall security. If results differ, stop the wider migration and document the symptom, system and package source.
