Permanently rotate PDF pages with PDFsam Basic and save them

A PDF viewer’s rotate button may change only the current view. Reopening the output is what shows whether the correction was actually saved in the file. PDFsam Basic provides a free permanent rotation module without uploading the PDF to an online service.

Identify pages first

Keep the original unchanged and work on a copy. Note the affected page positions counted from the beginning of the document. Printed page numbers may differ because of a cover or Roman numerals. Start with one file rather than a large batch.

Rotate and create output

  1. Open the Rotate module in PDFsam Basic. Add the PDF copy by drag and drop.
  2. Select all pages, even pages, odd pages or a specific range. The official help gives 2-13,17 as an example: positions 2 through 13, plus 17.
  3. Select 90, 180 or 270 degrees. Use 180 degrees for an upside-down page; test the direction on a copy for sideways pages.
  4. Check the output folder and filename before starting. Do not overwrite the original. Choose a separate empty output folder if necessary.
  5. Click Run and wait for successful completion. An error message is not a confirmed result.

Verify the saved rotation

Close the processed file and open the exact output from your chosen folder, preferably in a second PDF viewer. Check page count and order. Selected pages must appear correctly without manual view rotation; unselected pages must retain their previous orientation. Check each affected page when portrait and landscape pages are mixed.

Also inspect readability and complete page edges. If printing, check print preview: automatic printer orientation is a separate setting and does not prove saved rotation. Do not confuse similarly named original and output files.

Troubleshooting and limits

If the range or direction was wrong, return to the original working copy and generate new output. This avoids uncertainty from repeated rotations applied to each other. Even or odd selection makes sense only when the pattern is consistent throughout.

Rotation does not straighten skewed scanned text, add OCR or recover missing pages. Resolve permissions for protected PDFs rather than bypassing protection. For signed or interactive documents, do not assume signatures or form features survive unchecked; retain the original and validate the output separately.
