Definition of boards

One Platine, auch Leiterplatte is an electronic component and is mechanically fixed in a device. In almost every electrical device you will find one or more printed circuit boards in different sizes. A printed circuit board is made of fiber-reinforced plastic and is not conductive on its own. Previously, a mixture of phenolic resin with paper was used. Today, the printed circuit boards are produced from glass fiber mats impregnated with epoxy resin. The material has proven itself by its better leakage resistance.

In order for electrical signals to be conducted further on a printed circuit board, corresponding conductor tracks are etched on and can be galvanically amplified. These conductor tracks usually consist of a very thin copper layer. In addition to copper, tin, nickel and gold can also be applied via electroplating. If the layers of copper and gold lie directly on top of each other, a barrier layer of nickel is necessary so that the signals can also be processed correctly.
Other components are attached to soldering surfaces, the so-called pads. They are held mechanically but are electrically connected to other components. In the case of larger printed circuit boards, the components can also be fastened with adhesive or screws. Boards are divided into three categories. Standard circuit boards are equipped on one and two sides with conductor tracks and components. Printed circuit boards bearing the designation Multilayer bestehen aus mehreren Lagen standard boards. These printed circuit boards are also referred to as multilayer circuit boards. The layers vary between 4 and 24 pieces, but always have an even number, which is due to the production process. The more layers are connected, the higher the cost of production. Due to today’s complex circuits in the smallest space, it has become necessary to develop multilayers and also to install them in electrical devices. Special techniques refer to all circuit boards which must have special properties which deviate enormously from the standard circuit boards. An example of this is the Starrflex circuit board. This is used where the circuit board is subjected to constant bending and thus a very high risk of breakage compared with conventional circuit boards is avoided.
