A website displays incorrectly or a feature fails? An extension may be involved, but it is not automatically the cause. A controlled comparison helps establish whether one extension affects the problem. This guide covers Chrome on computers.
Step by step
- Save unfinished input and define a repeatable test: open the same address and use the same feature. Record the current extension states.
- Open the Chrome menu → Extensions → Manage extensions or chrome://extensions. Temporarily switch off one self-installed extension that is not mandatory. Do not remove it initially.
- Reload the affected website and repeat the test. Do not change cookies, networking or other extensions at the same time, as that weakens the comparison.
- If the problem is unchanged, restore the previous switch position and test the next extension. Record the result of each attempt.
- If the problem disappears, check the association by enabling the extension again and repeating, provided it is safe. If there is a credible suspicion of malicious behavior, do not re-enable it; follow your IT security process instead.
Check the result
One successful attempt does not prove causation. The website or connection may have changed during testing. Record the suspect extension's name and version and the affected feature for its publisher's support team.
Undo and limitations
Restore the original settings of extensions not implicated by the tests. Do not force changes to managed security features. Incognito is not a conclusive extension test: explicitly permitted extensions can run there, while the session also changes.
