An app no longer responds, immediately closes or gets stuck loading? Start with steps that do not deliberately remove its saved data. Reinstalling is not a harmless first test: deleting an app may lose associated local data.
Record the error and data situation
Note app name, version, iPad model, iPadOS version and the last working step. Does it affect only this app or others too? If it still partly responds, save open work and export important documents to a separate location. Actually check the exported files. A cloud icon does not prove the latest change has already synchronized.
Close only the affected app
Open the app overview, called App Switcher or Exposé depending on iPadOS. Usually swipe up from the bottom edge and pause; on devices with a Home button, you can double-press it. Find the affected app and swipe its preview upward. Then reopen it using its icon.
Unsaved input may be lost. Do not routinely close every app as supposed memory or battery optimization. After reopening, test the exact action that failed, preferably first with a noncritical document.
Restart iPad normally
If the device still responds, use the normal power-off slider: without a Home button, hold the top button and either volume button; with a Home button, hold the top button. Drag the slider, wait about 30 seconds and turn the iPad on with the top button. For a completely frozen device, use Apple’s model-specific force-restart instructions. Do not select Erase All Content and Settings.
Check storage, connection and updates
Settings → General → iPad Storage shows low device storage. Read recommendations individually rather than removing unbacked-up documents. For an online app, also check connectivity and possible service outages. Open its App Store page and check available updates and release notes. Back up important data before app or iPadOS updates and test again afterward. An update may help, but does not prove the cause.
Do not confuse offloading with deleting
- Offload App: Removes the app itself but keeps documents and data on the device. The app must still be available to reinstall before you can use it again. This is not an external backup and does not necessarily remove damaged app data.
- Delete App: Removes the app and associated data. Whether content returns through an account depends on the app and a genuinely completed synchronization.
Neither is the next speculative step when important data exists only locally without backup. First clarify export, recovery and the app’s availability with its developer. A device backup does not automatically replace this check for every app.
Escalate with specific findings
If the fault remains, give app support the versions, free storage, exact steps and individual test results. Remove personal content from screenshots. Stop further interventions if important local data exists only inside the app that no longer starts; factory reset is not appropriate app diagnosis.
