Particular features of figures:
If only digits are entered in a cell, Excel interprets this input as a number. A negative number must be preceded by a minus sign.
Numbers shall be entered without thousands separator or other accessory. For example, if you put a currency symbol (€, $) in front of the number by hand, Excel interprets the input as text and can no longer count on this value. For decimal numbers, however, the comma must be set.
Numbers are placed in the default setting of Excel right aligned in the cell.
The last decimal place completes Excel commercially from 0 – 4, from 5 – 9. For calculations, however, Excel uses the unrounded content of a cell.
Large numbers are represented in the exponential notation.

Excel recognizes by the entered characters whether it is numbers, text or formulas.
Text in a cell is placed left aligned.
If the column width of a cell is not sufficient for the input text, the right adjacent cells are covered. However, if the neighboring right cell is not empty, Excel cuts the text to the right and displays the complete text only in the edit line at the top.
