LibreCAD: diagnose missing or incorrect fonts in CAD drawings

Missing characters, empty text boxes and shifted labels do not always have the same cause. Check a working copy and document the difference before replacing fonts. Menu names may vary by LibreCAD version.

Compare the display with the original first

Save a copy under a new name. Record application version, operating system and file format. Ask the sender for a reference PDF of the same drawing revision and the expected font name. A similar-looking font does not prove identical characters or text widths.

Check step by step

  1. Check View → Draft. In draft mode LibreCAD displays text only as bounding boxes. Turn this mode off for the check. Also confirm that the affected layer is visible and zoom in on the text.
  2. Open the properties of an affected text object using Modify → Properties. Record its text, font, height, angle and alignment; for multiline text, also line spacing. Close without changes while you are only documenting.
  3. Compare the actual text content with the reference. If the stored text is already wrong, changing fonts will not fix it. If only special characters are missing, test those exact characters; an available font name does not guarantee their appearance.
  4. Under Options → Application Preferences → Paths, check the additional Fonts path. It supplements the default paths. Ask for a font file suitable for LibreCAD from a trusted source and clarify its usage rights. An arbitrary operating-system font is not automatically interchangeable.

Change only one test location

Record existing paths and settings before changing them. Provide a suitable, permitted font and check whether it appears in the font selector; save all open work before any necessary application restart. First test a copied text object. Compare accented letters, diameter, degree and plus/minus symbols, line breaks, text width and overlaps. Do not replace every label at once or hastily convert text into lines.

Verify and hand over the result

Save the test drawing, reopen it and inspect print preview and the exported PDF. Compare the affected areas with the reference. Record file and revision, affected text or layers, expected and used font, before/after images and remaining errors. Explicitly identify any substitute font as a replacement. Without a reference or the correct font, the original appearance cannot be confidently confirmed; keep the original file unchanged.
