Unger starts the final construction phase
Oberwart (pts010/19.04.2013/11:30) – As of 2014, the significant 35,300 m2 steel roof of the new Vienna Central Station welcomes train passengers in the federal capital. The spectacular building is a landmark of modern mobility and a symbol of powerful dynamism, an unforgettable first impression of modern Vienna. In February 2013, the Unger Group started the final construction phase of the partially translucent roof construction, which will span all platforms, tracks and buildings and provide unique lighting effects both during the day and at night.

With the new main station, a central hub in the trans-European rail network is being built in Vienna, which for the first time connects trains from all directions in the federal capital and which will be frequented by more than 1,000 trains and 145,000 people per day. Train stations have always had an outstanding urban significance from both an architectural and logistical point of view. Due to the elevated new route, train passengers can first enjoy the city panorama in the future and then be welcomed by the significant and already widely visible roof, a landmark of modern mobility and functionality. This new striking steel construction project – a technical and logistical masterpiece – shapes the modern cityscape of Vienna in an impressive way and at the same time blends harmoniously into the historical environment and architecture.
Basic construction
The entire roof structure consists of a canopy, 14 diamond and five single platform roofs. On the west side of the station, five platforms are spanned by a roof structure consisting of 14 diamond-shaped, folded roof elements. These are 76 meters long and are supported in the platform direction every 38 meters with a twin support. In the center, the construction opens and releases a skylight in the size of about 6 x 30 meters. By displacing the neighboring supports each by half a rhombus length, an elongated, attractive zigzag silhouette is obtained. The adjoining roof high points and low points are likewise connected via glass constructions and serve for additional illumination or lighting. Smoking.
On the east side, this dynamic diamond structure on the west side is transferred to a single platform system. The end in the east is designed with an end piece, which should constructively resemble a roof diamond.
Construction phase I scheduled to be completed in April 2012
The first construction phase began in 2011 and was completed on schedule at the end of April 2012, although the winter 2011/12 offered extremely difficult conditions, such as winds of 50 to 60 km/h at simultaneous temperatures of up to – 15 degrees. Exceptional human and technical performance enabled the timely completion of the first eight of 14 diamond roofs and three of the five single platform roofs. By the end of construction phase I, 60 percent of the steel construction had been completed and suggest a foretaste of the final state.
Construction phase II – scheduled to begin in February 2013
The second construction phase with the final assembly work began at the end of February 2013. In December 2012, the Vienna Central Station was opened in part: since then, around 40,000 passengers and 700 trains frequent the station every day and give a first impression of what the process will be after the completion of this mega project.
In the next few months, the remaining six of the 14 diamond trusses will be raised. In addition to the technical and a logistical challenge: The Unger Steel Group was entrusted as part-general contractor with the production and construction of the complex roof. In this role, the company coordinates eight other professionals, whose performance progress is monitored daily on site. The coordination with the pre- and post-works such as master builders, building technology, electrical work entails considerable coordination effort. The fact that the assembly time can be met despite these complex conditions is due to the long-standing expertise of the Unger Steel Group in comprehensive project and construction site management and the competence as an interface function with planning expertise.
The fourth and fifth single platform roofs are currently being assembled and the equipment for high-voltage and catenary lines is being installed. By the end of August, nine diamonds and all five single platforms as well as the canopy south have been assembled. The final stage starts with the installation of the last diamond in November 2013, the final completion of which will be completed by the beginning of 2014.
Impressive numbers
35 experts from the Unger Group, consisting of project managers, structural engineers and constructors, spent weeks and months to create realizable steel structures that bridge the gap between architecture and structural requirements. Each diamond is a testament to the highest craftsmanship and perfection: around 7,000 hours of planning, 5,500 individual drawings, 700 component drawings and 100 overview plans are contained in each diamond. 2,363 profiles and 13,489 sheets are assembled after the blank to 991 welded components and assembled on the construction site with 13,489 screws and 2,799 loose components to form a complete object. The steel structure of a diamond is assembled in an average of 25 days.
Until completion of the entire roof structure, which is one of the largest national projects for the Unger Group, approximately 338,380 screw fittings are processed. The total tonnage is around 7,000 tonnes, of which around 3,423 tonnes of sheet metal and 3,461 tonnes of profiles. 10 to 20 installers operate on site with the highest precision to assemble each of the complex diamond roofs without errors.
